We were half way down the island at the tree of life, so we decided to see how far south we could go. Up until very recently the public wasn't allowed to go past about halfway down on the island. So basically the entire southern part was off limits, because there is a huge military base down there. Well now, some investors are deciding to build a huge city at the southern tip called "Durrat Al Bahrain." Go to the website durratbahrain.com. This is fucking amazing. This is a model here of it in the picture. There are going to be these huge horseshoe islands with homes on them. You can see the hotels on the model, so that gives you an idea of how big this is going to be. There will be schools, malls, everything. Right now they are in the beginning stages, but the islands themselves are mostly built. Now they are starting to build villas and such, priced 400K to 1 million US, which seems fairly reasonable, all things considered. The salesman that was at this showroom thought we were potential buyers (because we're American) and took us out on the islands in a four wheel drive SUV. It was sweet. And I mean sweet. This is going to be a bad-ass city when it's done. Right now it's mostly sand, but it's still extremely cool. When this is all said and done, the general public won't be able to go out on those horse shoes because those will be for residents only. The sales dude took us out there and that will probably be the last time we'll ever step foot on one of those islands. You can go to google earth and check them out. Way cool.
